With this Vuelta rapidly drawing to a close, and the final Grand Tour of the season running out of road, the 186.5km (115.9mi) Eighteenth Stage from Burgos to Peña Cabarga was bound to be hard and fast. Astana's Vincenzo Nibali started the day with a 28-second lead on Chris Horner in the battle atop the overall standings.

For the stage from Calahorra to Burgos, the 189km Seventeenth Stage of this year's Vuelta, there was only one criterion for an early breakaway. It had to be small. Plenty were ready for action, but the Astana team of race leader Vincenzo Nibali made it clear: we're hauling back big groups.

When the day dawned before the start of La Vuelta's Stage Fifteen, the riders saw exactly what they lived the day before, dark skies and rain. It was warmer, but they had to steel themselves for the possibility that the 224.9km ride from Andorra to Peyragudes in France, the queen stage of the race, would be contested completely in rain.

On the toughest day of the Vuelta thusfar, the riders were gifted with the worst weather conditions of the race thus far. The short 155.7km (96.7km) stage that started in Bagà crossed three mountains en route to the mountain summit finish of Collada de la Gallina in Andorra.

The first third of this year's Vuelta closed with a spectacular climbing stage. This tenth leg of the race took the racers south from Torredelcampo to Alto Hazallanas on an 186.8km (116.1mi) ride.
