Incredible. I wish I could afford the carbon but from my perspective, I made a giant upgrade over my giant xtc 29er which was my old single track solution. Older, less aggressive trails just aren't any fun anymore. It's all about harrowing downhill boulder hurdling and pressing the blue button on climbs.

Get on one and ride it. It's incredibly fast and nimble. Love the new lefty too

Just upgraded my Cannondale F29 and this is a HUGE step forward. I took it for its 1st ride and I have to stay it handles like a race car.

The only things I would change is the shifters and brakes.

I am a weekly rider in south florida. Lots of roots, rocks and ups and downs. I have been riding a full suspension trek for the past couple years and this is my first 29r and lefty. Ive been an avid rider for 12 years. Always a 26r. First ride was with my brother who normally keeps up with me and he couldn't half way through the park. I was flying at half the effort. I honestly felt like nothing was in my way and the energy to push forward was largely reduced. This bike was worth every penny!!! I have not found any faults yet. I was worried about the wider handlebars and a learning curve with the increased wheel size but it felt like I went from a huffy to a monster truck. Incredible bike!

I do mainly long (80 - 170km) rides on dirt roads and jeep tracks. The Scalpel 3 is the perfect bike for this purpose.
                                  pros: Very comfortable.
Very efficient. Precise handling on the odd singletrack that I encounter.
cons: Some lighter bikes available in this price range.

Comments about cannondale SCALPEL 29ER 3:

Experienced MTN rider of 19 years. I ride single track and jeep trails 2x per week. Several very long rides per month.

Upgraded to the Scalpel 3 from a 5 year old Specialized Stumpjumper (XTR). Though I lost a couple inches of travel, the 29r was smoother. So smooth, I find myself riding it "locked out" front and rear most of the time. It is much, much lighter and a far superior climber.

I switched to the 29 after riding with friends who killed me on one of our regular rides. Typically we all stay within sight of one another during rides. We are all at, or around the same fitness/skill level. They went to 29rs and I coudn't hang with them to save my life. They left me so far in the dust, I couldn't even see them. After switching, we are all on the same level again. It is that stark a contrast.

Terrific all around bike. It gives up stability on fast, technical descents and it gets sketchy on slow, rocky downhill sections, but I'll take it over a lumbering/heavy uphill climbing any day.

For the money ($3500+) I'd expect better components than the 3rd & 4th tear stuff that is on it. Would even like to see a carbon fiber doo-hicky, or two. Seems like I spent nearly $500 less for full XTR on my Stumpy. Not really an "apples to apples" comparison, but still ...

This is a HUGE upgrade for me, but has really pushed me into riding more and experimenting more on the trails. It took a while to get used to the height with the 29ers, but now I couldn't imagine being on anything else. I love the weight and handling, many places here in FL are very rocky (coral) and rooty, and the Scalpel takes it all. After trying the SRAM X0's, I wish this bike had that component set (like the Lexi 0), but I will upgrade in the future. I cannot speak about durability, as it is still new, but an amazing bike!

After testing a few other 29ers I decided to try the scalpel. I had a 2003 scalpel and liked it, but it was too race oriented.I was very sceptical about going to a 29er and the 2x10 drivetrain. Well the second I jumped on the scalpel 29er3 I was hooked, it feels like it was custom made for me. the ride quality is unbelievable, like there's no bike under me. It has a noticable upright comfortable position, even with a flat bar. As for the 2x10 drivetrain it's perfect, I love it so far in all conditions.I have ridden it on 3 to 4 hour rides and still feel like there's something left in the tank, compared to my usually tiring around the 2 and a half hour mark.

I read reviews about how this bike was super-fast, but couldn't quite comprehend what they were talking about - how can a bike be fast (isn't it the rider?). Being my first 29er, it took a couple of rides to get used to the longer wheelbase and wider handle bars. Once I got used to it, I knew what the reviewers were referring to. This bike is absolutely amazing! Super-fast, super handling, bulls over anything. I ride rocky, very technical single-track in the Northeast. This bike rocks! The level of my riding has soared with this bike. I bull over boulders and up rock-faced mountains that I used to think were unridable, and zip through tight switchbacks like I'm on rails. Great gear ratios and riding position enable me to ride further, faster and longer than my previous bikes. I had reservations about going with a Lefty, but don't notice anything other than the fact that its a great fork. Other than poor grip and wear from the tires, especially the rear (replaced both tires after a few rides), this bike is amazing!
