Heads to Spain Targeting Vueta Stage Wins
Liquigas-Cannondale’s Peter Sagan entered Saturday’s final stage of the Tour of Poland trailing overall leader Tony Martin by just three seconds. With an intermediate sprint awarding time bonuses of three, two and one second, and further finish line bonuses of ten, six and four seconds, Sagan knew his chances were high to take the overall.
The intermediate sprint saw Martin’s teammate Heinrich Haussler take on Sagan in an attempt to steal the bonus from him. The fast German beat Sagan to the line, but it was later revealed that he had closed off the young Slovak in the process. Haussler would later be relegated, but Sagan went into the final sprint with the intention of placing top-three to take maximum bonus time. He would cross the line in second, celebrating alongside stage winner Marcel Kittel who took his fourth stage win.
Sagan, just 21 years old and celebrating his seventh ProTour victory and first overall, now heads to the Vuelta a España with stage wins in his sight. Teammate Vincenzo Nibali returns to defend his overall victory won last year.
