Micro Adventures

Most of us grew up believing that, for some reason, adventure always means far, far away. Beyond the folds in dusty old maps. Requiring planning, visas, vaccines and quitting our jobs.

The truth is that adventure doesn’t demand distance to be rewarding. It’s not measured in how many passport stamps we pick up. And it really doesn’t need months carved out of ordinary life to scratch that itch that we all have inside us.

Nowadays, we’re coming to realize that adventure is a mindset. It doesn’t need to be found at the edge of the earth. More like the edge of our routines.

Think Local

Adventure can be as big or as small as we want it to be. It can last a week, or an hour during our lunch break if we want it to. Because adventure begins the very moment that we step (or pedal) beyond the predictable. The second that we choose curiosity over convenience and point ourselves in the direction of something less expected.

Paradoxically, it’s never been easier to get our adventure on. Because the same modern world that fills our days and calendars with meetings, responsibilities and distractions, has also given us an incredible tool: the urban e-bike. A two wheeled machine built for a million possibilities .

So what does a modern micro adventure look like on a modern urban e-bike ? Well, it can look like absolutely anything you want it to be. And that’s the beauty of it.

Maybe it’s leaving the house an hour or two early in the morning and taking a longer route to work, arriving with a story to tell and a new bakery to recommend.

Maybe it’s the trail through the woods or forest that you’ve driven past countless times in the car, suddenly becoming your new route home, with new views, new smells and a whole new dimension to your day and routine.

Or maybe it’s a night away that’s a comfortable ride away, with a hot meal to refuel in a neighboring city, town or village that you’ve never paused in before.

Because you don’t need to rough it under the stars or tent to feel like you’ve seen something or somewhere new. You just need a little curiosity, a toothbrush, and that first turn of the pedals.

From Farm to Finish Line

For Owen Blandy, professional chef with the EF Pro Cycling team, something as straightforward as picking up groceries becomes an adventure in its own right every time a re-stock is needed.

Because the team can be racing and training in a different part of the world every week, he chooses to travel with the Cannondale Cargowagen.

One Ride Away

But what does it look like when you decide to embark on an adventure that tests the capabilities of a modern e-bike?

Cannondale colleague and curious commuter, Christian, decided to see what a day out on his Tesoro  would look like if he wanted to squeeze every last drop out of its reported 185km battery range.

Setting out from Zermatt, Christian chose to really put his bike with its Bosch power unit to the test. So, he pointed it towards Chamonix, across the French Alps and a decent day in the saddle away.

Taking in all manner of roads, vineyards and Alpine villages, more than 10 hrs later Christian breezed into Chamonix very ready for a well-earned meal. Not only did the Tesoro cover 189km that day, it still had 6% charge left, thanks to its handy and highly efficient Eco mode.

One bike, one charge, and one day. What an adventure.

A modern e-bike simultaneously shrinks the world around you, while stretching the possibilities of what a morning, a day or even a weekend can look like.
