Mason himself discusses living with Bipolar II disorder and learning to balance the positive effects of training with his tendency toward hyperfocus. His story centers on this balance: learning how to harness an intense and competitive mind without allowing that intensity to consume the other important parts of life.

The long race to the start line of Unbound 200 for four very different riders.
Before race numbers are pinned on. Before the starting gun is raised. Before pedals are turned in anger. Long before all this, there’s a different kind of race.
It’s a race of preparation. Of sleepless nights and endless planning. It’s the race to the race. And, for every rider, it’s every bit as important as the main event – if not more so.
“Beyond The Blur” is a documentary series that follows four riders’ stories as they prepare to take on UNBOUND 200 – all while exploring the relationship between endurance sport, mental health, identity and the different seasons of life.
Beyond The What?
The series, created by Mason Duling in partnership with Almost Manic apparel, grew from the belief that endurance sports are about much more than performance, results, or how far or fast someone can go. They can also offer a space to navigate mental health, find connection, and better understand ourselves.
“The name takes inspo from Almost Manic’s phrase “Into the Blur” says Mason. “In endurance sports, there can be moments when the noise surrounding everyday life begins to disappear. And the focus becomes simply being present and moving forward. Beyond The Blur explores what people can find in these moments.”
The UNBOUND race provides the destination and the backdrop for our four riders and their stories. Prepping for 200 miles through the Flint Hills takes months of training, sacrifice, patience, and support from those around you. Each rider followed across the series brings a deeply personal perspective to this idea...

Sam explores becoming a new father and continuing to pursue difficult goals as his priorities and responsibilities change. His story draws a natural parallel between endurance sport and fatherhood. UNBOUND is about more than completing 200 miles. It’s a tangible example of continuing to challenge himself while embracing a stage of life in which his time is no longer entirely his own.

Blake reflects on rebuilding his identity after the end of a highly successful collegiate swimming career. During college, swimming was his life. 20 hours of training per week, structure, teammates, competition and purpose. His UNBOUND story centers on what happens when something that once defined you disappears and how sport can become something different in the next chapter of life.

Nathan’s history and relationship with endurance sports is particularly nuanced. After developing anorexia and obsessive-compulsive behaviors around food and exercise as a younger athlete, he eventually became malnourished enough that participating in the sports he loved was near-impossible.
After therapy, medication and rehabilitation, exercise was not just something that helped him through a difficult period. At one point, it was intertwined with the problem itself.
For Nathan, UNBOUND represents the opportunity to engage with a sport he has loved for much of his life from a healthier place. His story is ultimately about relationship and balance, allowing him to reclaim something that was once unhealthy while learning to engage with it for entirely different reasons.
The engaging series uses endurance sport and gravel riding as a way to tell these deeply personal stories. The four guys may be taking on the same 200-mile race, but each one arrives at the start line with a very different reason for being there. Ultimately, the series is about what we carry with us into difficult moments and what we can discover about ourselves along the way.
We think you’ll get a lot from watching the series, and you can check it out and learn more about the project below.
