Research before buying bike, mainly just comparing bikes on the net. Purchased from a local dealer for around the same price as internet deals on comparable bikes, I think is a good idea to shop local. would suggest going to a number of different bike shops to get the best info and deals, that said I quite like the bike overall, have been on a few good rides so far the bike hasnt missed a beat, sadly bent the rear derailleur today after falling on a tight trail.
Front shocks I have found to be only a little lacking but no other complaints.
The bike is still far better than my skills and fitness level at the moment.

Im 6ft and bought a large, happy with the size.
Oh, the stock pedals are very average, try and work in a better pair on the deal.
Stock tyres seem adequate, nothing special.Have only ridden in dry conditions so far.
Great looking bike, had some good comments.
Love being able to lock front forks on the go, great feature, what ever you buy make sure it has this!
Brakes very good, plenty of feel.
Smooth gear change (until today lol)
    I'm happy with my choice.

I researched several bikes before I purchased this one. I would like to add that I am an avid bike rider. I have a large; the bike ways 32 lbs. if anyone is wondering. Aesthetically, the bike is very nice. I am not impressed with the weight of the bike, but it is not a concern for me. I would like to caution people about the wheels. They are not very strong, so I would not attempt any tricks on the bike. I did a couple 180s while riding the bike and bent wheel beyond repair. With that being said, 29ERS are not the type of bike you want to do tricks on because the wheels are susceptible to bend, due to the size of the wheel. Also, I believe the derailleur is bent already, and folks I have owned this bike for two months and the bike only has 50 miles on it. Long story short, for over $800 after taxes I expected more quailty than in the TRAIL 29ER 5

I really like this bike, I'm a Cannondale enthusiast and own a Quick 3 hybrid ax well. The Trail 5 is extremely well built and great on and off road. 29ers power through mud and other unforgiving terrain. I'm a recreational user so not sure how it would perform in competition but serves my purpose brilliantly as a 6ft, 15 stone man and it looks the biz! Love it.

I've been riding 36 years and this is my favourite. Going on little rides here and there, then a good couple hour weekend ride or camping at a bike friendly spot. I'm tall so when i heard of 29ers i started the study. After every night two weeks straight the Cannondale 5 won. Quality parts, decent weight, even though there were plenty of more expensive rides out there this one really felt right. The larger wheels make a difference going over obstacles and since I'm on a third floor it goes up and down stairs much more easily, however wheelies are different and took some getting used to. Overall the new feel is still with it after several months but i could do without the noisy rear sprocket, when you're rolling down a quiet path its clicking is annoying. I would also like to see at least a larger front brake since the wheel is larger. A kick stand would be nice for the urban rides. All in all I'm pleased:)

Hi, i ride something like 3 miles uphill everyday, and also 6 miles on flat terrain, with occasional medium all-day off-road trips.
There is no too much philosophy here: bike has outstanding frame, and both fork and wheels are ok.
On the other hand, components are somewhat poor: upgrade to deore/slx (or similar SRAM combination of components) if you want to fully enjoy the frame!

I shopped around before purchasing a mountain bike. I really liked the look of the specialized hardrock disk sport but the bike didnt feel right for me. The Bike that felt best and rode best in MY opinion is the cannondale Trail 5 29er. For what I am using this bike for (recreation) its perfect! It's very smooth and really comfortable. I went with the Large frame and the bike feels really sturdy. I convinced my brother to buy one too.

Use it for commuting and hill races. Already won me two. 29" tires are the real deal. Can get very fast once you get it going. Breaks really well for its size. Used it overseas in hot tropical countries like India. Couldnt be more happy with its performance.
Not too great for shorter people. i.e less than 165 cms.
