This is supposed to be a cyclocross bike but it isn't possible to swap the front wheel because of the front brake fouling the fork. It's a standard bike. Cannondale's advice was to deflate the tyre, change the wheel & then pump the tyre up again - not very handy mid race!
So I have to change the front brake over at my expense. The back brake doesn't have this issue.
Also the brake pads on the front can't be changed because the fork fouls the access screw. So no quick pad changes.

After quite a bit of researching, I eventually purchased a CAADX105 from my Local Cannondale agent Billy-Bislands (Glasgow). The agent could not have been more helpful.
However I have been plagued with problems with the bike, extreme brake judders, extreme brake squealing, chain bounce badly chipping the frame, gear set either locking or jumping when not requested, various creaking from saddle, seat post, wheels, handle bars, grinding from the crank bearing (agent informed me that this had not been greased from the factory) etc.
This was reported to the agent and taken back within a week of purchase, they attempted to resolve what they could, however mainly unsuccessful.
The bike went back a second time, same result.

I then e-mailed Cannondale directly regarding these aspects, I also praised the agents attempts to resolve, Cannondale's response was arrogant, dismissive and unprofessional, culminating in them telling me to never contact them again as they would not respond to any future attempts to contact them.
This is unacceptable, especially for a bike which was not even a month old at this point, I e-mailed again, six months later I still have not received a response.
I have a engineering background, thus I have been left to resolve what I can, brake squeal etc remains, and is highly embarrassing at times.
Simply the bike was not fit for purpose, and Cannondale Customer Services are similar NOT FIT FOR PURPOUSE.

I love this bike. Smooth. Handles well. The only negative is the brakes. I wish this came with disc brakes like the carbon model. Cannondale makes the best aluminum framesets I've ever tried, and I don't want the carbon version for gravel. Please C'dale! Make the CAADX Aluminum available with disc brakes in the near future!

                      Comments about cannondale CAADX 105:

I primarily use the bike to commute in an area where the roads are rough and not all paved. I also do an occasional century on it, or go goof around at the local 'cross race.

Most road specific bikes I looked at were either poorly built or to racy and fragile for what I was looking to do. I wanted to run 28c tires, I wanted a responsive frame that would soak up some road noise and didn't weigh a ton. This fit the bill well. Cannondale has done a good job improving the ride quality of aluminum with their thin line technology. It is not as smooth as steel, but it is much better than the dump truck quality ride I'm used to from aluminum. The stock carbon legged fork compliments the frame well. The geometry is fairly relaxed, and I spend most of my time in the drops, pretty much only coming out to grind out hills.

Most of the stock components are good commuter/amateur race quality. The 105 shifters and derailluers work like you would expect from Shimanos' work horse group. The crank set is stiff and picks up the chain fairly well. A 105 cassette would have been nice.

If your planning on using this bike as more than a wall decoration though, throw the wheels and pedals away. Some quality midrange 400-500$ (ie shimano ultegra/fulcrum racing quattros/reynolds solitude) wheels liven up the ride and make a world of difference in the performance of this bike. To be fair, most stock wheel sets in this price range leave a lot to be desired.

I have 2 bones to pick with the frame, the part Cannondale actually made.

                      1. The front brakes. They do not open wide enough to change the front wheel without deflating the tire if you are running wider than a 25c (28c if you push real hard) and they screech. No amount of fiddling with the toe in has been able to resolve it, and it has happened with 3 wheel sets.
                      2. The water bottle mounts on my 51cm frame are just barely to close together, and the mounts on the down tube are off center / crooked. Its not a deal breaker, but it is annoying.

All in all I am pleased with my purchase. It does what I need it to do well, It is every bit as fast as most road specific bikes while offering the versatility of being able to run fat tires, racks and fenders. I hope this review is helpful for those considering this bike. I ride mine hard and put it away wet and it hasn't failed me yet :)

This is my go-to bike when I dont want to pull out the full road race bike or full suspenson 29er or my fixie. This does it all (almost) great for group rides, commuting trips where unknown surfaces are. I will be riding this bike in the 2013 RAGBRAI (ride across Iowa, Im a member of the Air Force Bicycle team). the only complaint i had was deflaiting the front tire to remove the wheel for transport (the brake pads when opened hit the inside of the forks and would not allow enough clearance), easily fixed with another brand of brake pads that are avaliable in a "thin line" configuration.

The last 2 months bike was in shop 11 days!
                                  Bottom bracket was replaced.
Then noises started and bike was stripped down several times but clicking, grinding sound kept coming back.
BB,cranks and drivetrain was replaced with 1200 miles.
3 days later back again...dealer gave me a brand new bike.
Never in 40 years had a more noisy and frustrating bike.

The lack of brake clearance for the front tire because of the type of brake installed is a serious and silly design flaw. How absurd to recommend deflating and inflating the tire every time the front tire needs to be removed which for me is every time I hang up the bike. Luckily my mechanic thought of a fix by replacing the brake pad cassette with mountain bike brakes that allow just enough room. But this is an annoying lack of attention to design detail by Canondale.

                                        Comments about cannondale CAADX 105:

As an exclusive MTB'er the CAADX-105 was my first 'road' bike since my Univega Nuovo Sport that I bought in '82(stolen in '85). I bought it because of its versatility. I'd been occasionally commuting on a retrofitted '89 Trek 7000, and that was great, but wanted something I could commute on and do road rides on(not to mention, I'll be doing a couple of cross events on it this fall). I've been commuting on it a couple of times a week this spring, and have done 3 group road rides. The bike has been great so far. Looking forward to commuting most days this summer, and a dirt-road metric century in August.

As many have noted, the brakes just don't stop that well, and do shudder/squeal a bit. Kool-Stop pads do help. By now I'm used to it and not bothered by it.

Upgraded to an SRAM RED 50/34 crank for road use, no problems there. Planet Bike fenders did take some retrofitting to work on the 'cross frame, but some ingenuity with zip ties, scrap metal and a grinding wheel took care of that. Topeak rack has been _great_. I'll note that the rear braze-ons at the dropout(forgive my terminology)did not accept screws readily, and I worry about stripping them, hence, I'll only be taking the rack on/off a couple of times a year.

All in all, quite happy with the purchase.

I picked this bike based on its components and light weight as a bike to cover long distances that involve both trail and road - e.g. attempting the coast to coast in a day. Have been amazed at the difference in comfort over my road bike with only a slight loss of speed. It is a cracking bike. My cycling companion bought the slightly more expensive Kona Jake the Snake which seems to have a slightly faster cadence on the very steep hills but otherwise this is just as good and over £300 cheaper. Real value for money and won't disappoint.

this bike performs well in all the necessary categories and excels in them for the price point.
Handling, that feeling of "speed" and the real speed, good component mix, comfortable enough for the longer hauls but not too plush to be noodly.
Plus it looks cool too, and is a frameset worth upgrading as time goes by.
Overall may be the funnest bike I'v ever had even if it isn't the purest racer.

I love this bike. Had the bike for 1 year and been on 2 tours over 3000 miles and the frame has seen its share of crashes but it still rides true. Bike is light weight and able to handle a fully loaded racks with out a problem.

Recommend changing stem, seat, bar tape, cranks, tires and adding tire liners and rim tape to prevent spoke popping inner tube ( this was a real problem)
