Cannondale News: Chicchi Takes Liquigas-Doimo’s First in 2010!

Francesco Chicchi, as he did in 2009’s Tour Down Under, claimed the first victory of the season for Liquigas-Doimo. The compact Tuscan sprinting ace put two bicycle lengths between himself and Edgardo Simon and Danilo Napolitano in the opening stage of the Tour of San Luis in Argentina.

“I could not have started better,” confirmed Chicchi. “During the winter I worked hard to show up with good form. This result shows that the hard work paid off. I felt good in the days before the race and the finish in Villa Mercedes was ideal for a sprint. My teammates worked perfectly, first to bring back the break and then to put me in position for the sprint. When Nibali launched the sprint, I was on Napolitano’s wheel and with 200 meters to go I opened up the gas for the pass.”

Director Mario Scirea applauded the teamwork and his sprinter: “The guys worked hard to serve up the sprint for Francesco, which he exploited in the best way possible. We contributed in the chase, and with seven kilometers from the finish we took the reins of the group with Katusha to disctate the pace. The sprint went perfectly and we were rewarded with a great win!”
