Comments about cannondale TRAIL SL 29ER 3 SS:

Pros: light, nimble and nice to look at.

Decided to go single speed after many years of riding geared. Not looking back. Was tossing between kona unit, surly karate monkey and am very satisfied after choosing the cannondale. It's slightly lighter than the unit and at a much better price point than the surly. With the rigid fork and stock tires it's a bit skittish, but in a fun way. Even at a size large frame and with the big wheels it handles amazingly well in tight trails. With the money saved as opposed to the other options, I had room to upgrade pedals (a must), grab a few rear sprocket options, and a set of rock shock rebas. Even after adding the new fork (and necessary components due to the tube size) the bike is still delightfully light, and is a bit more forgiving during decents. Downright cushy actually. Amazed at the value of this bike. Many fun and complaint free miles on my SS this year. :)

Cons: *finicky bottom bracket, steer tube size

If you wish to do your own chain maintenance and gear swaps, ask for a demo on this bottom bracket. Once you figure it out it's manageable but still a bit of a pain. It functions very well, but it is not the most user friendly piece of hardware out there. Please don't listen to complaints about brakes, tires or pedals. They are all excellent value for a ready to ride bike. The money you save will let you customize to your heart's content. One other thing that would be nice is a tapered, or more conventionally sized steer tube; it would give more options for forks. That being said, it's designed to be a rigid bike and the fatty fork is weightless and a joy to ride.

Great ride, surprised how well everything worked right out of the shop. I did upgrade a few features including wheels, bottom bracket, and gearing, but not that you have to. People tell me how great the bike looks, and when they ride it, they all tell me how great it rides too. I will be keeping this bike for a long time!

Comments about cannondale TRAIL SL 29ER 3 SS:

i race for a team so i got this to support the team shop...got my discount (sweet) and was on the road (on the way to trails) in no time...

...chain broke about 6 miles in...no biggie...teammate lived around the corner, so that was quickly fixed.

the 33x20 stock ss ratio is a perfect happy medium...i've raced xc (last season) and endurance (this season) on that set up. soon changing it to 33x19 or 34x20...

i've put nearly 2000 miles on this aluminum frame and fork...ridden hard...crashed hard. i've done 12 hour solo races on it and 50+ milers on it. what's made it work as a rigid machine is i've replaced the front tire with on one's chunky monkey 2.4...with stans...perfect. soon to try the surly rabbit hole w/knard 3"...!

my one complaint...i wish this had track ends and not an EBB...it's a nightmare if you aren't a mechanic. it's taken mechanics a bit of head scratching to figure it out. seems to slip alot and get loose. haven't replaced it yet, but not sure i am going to upgrade a 2000 mile aluminum race bike or go for something else.

nonetheless, highly recommened, precise engineering, the fat head tube is spot on...the slightly high center of gravity serves it well as a rigid, rock garden monster.

if you want to stay fast, slap some small block 8s on it...and go give hilly billy roubaix some "l'enfer"...

                        BOTH THUMBS UP!

I researched many 29er SS bikes online and at bike shops and found this one looking for a test ride. I have always rode BMX and freestyle bikes but as I'm getting a little older big air is no longer my thing. I have heard some poor reviews over the components on this rig and kind of laugh, no the bike does not have 2 piston hydraulic brakes but I'm used to no brakes or wheel brakes so the manual discs on this work like a slice of heaven to me!! I have killed many BMX frames in the past, I don't think there is any killing this frame and fork unless you weigh 500 lbs and catch 10ft of air. Couldn't be happier with this hard tail SS coming from the BMX world!

This bike is amazing. I had a yeti stolen, so needed to replace that bike with a cheap simple stand-in, this bike is riding everything that I did on the yeti, Ok, not with the same confidence, but basically, I'm riding most things that I used to....pretty cool!

I work at a shop and my boss let me take this one for a spin. I've ridden rigid bikes before and this one still delivers. The weight, the response, and the raw feel are all there. The gearing is what got me though, it is spot on. The parts could be better but you can't beat the price. All in all, a great starter for someone looking into an SS setup. Keep the frame, and play with upgrades.
