After seven hard races, the 2011 World Cup season is in the books. CFR had its best season so far with Marco Aurelio Fontana sitting in eighth position overall, followed by Manuel Fumic in eleventh and Martin Gujan in twentieth.
Fumic and Fontana started the race well and positioned themselves in the leading group right after the start. Conditions were hot and the six laps on the Val di Sole race course were steep and hard. Both were not able to hold the speed of the leaders on the third lap and dropped back a little. While Fumic recovered and made up positions in the final two laps, Fontana had the same symptoms as one week prior in Nove Mesto, with cramps and pain in his lungs. Fumic ended the race in eleventh position and Fontana in nineteenth. Martin Gujan finished the Val di Sole race in twenty-seventh position.
"I am not sure what this problem is that i had the last two races. It all starts well, and all of a sudden I can't breathe anymore and I feel powerless. I will work hard to find the problem over the next two weeks, to be back in the game for Worlds in Champery," Fontana said after the race.
Manuel Fumic stated: "The race went actually pretty good, I am just missing a bit of power to be able to ride with the top guys. If all works to plan, this power should be there for worlds. I changed my way of racing and it feels good the way it is."
Fontana and Gujan were racing their Flash 26, while Fumic used his Flash 29.
CFR will now have a one week break, before they hit the World Championships in Champery Switzerland.
