    Vuelta a España - Stage 20

    Stage Twenty, the penultimate stage of the Vuelta, was not only the final mountain stage, but also finished atop the brutally steep Alto de L'Angliru, a 12.2km road averaging a 10.2% gradient, but vaulting up to over 20% in seconds. The Angliru was the fourth, and hardest, climb of the day. The stage, and the race, was going to be decided here.

    With this Vuelta rapidly drawing to a close, and the final Grand Tour of the season running out of road, the 186.5km (115.9mi) Eighteenth Stage from Burgos to Peña Cabarga was bound to be hard and fast. Astana's Vincenzo Nibali started the day with a 28-second lead on Chris Horner in the battle atop the overall standings.

    When the day dawned before the start of La Vuelta's Stage Fifteen, the riders saw exactly what they lived the day before, dark skies and rain. It was warmer, but they had to steel themselves for the possibility that the 224.9km ride from Andorra to Peyragudes in France, the queen stage of the race, would be contested completely in rain.
