Peter Sagan again showed off his range of talent by winning the drag race into Livermore at the end of the Amgen Tour of California's stage three. By besting some of the hottest pure sprinters in the world, Sagan once again proved that he has a chance to win at almost any type of race.

Liquigas-Cannondale again were at the front of the group controlling the pace and chasing down the day's breakaway. Americans Ted King and Tim Duggan were joined by their teammates in the pursuit and showed how well they fit into this Italian team.

Sagan retains his leadership in the overall, sprint and best young rider classifications. The win marks his third in a row and sixth in his career at the Tour of California. He is just one shy of Levi Leipheimer's race record. When asked about his chances of keeping the yellow until the end, Sagan was not optimistic. "This race is very hard for me because there are long climbs at the finish (on stage 6 and 7) and I don't do very good at the time trial, maybe I will try to hold the yellow jersey one more day, but after the time trial we will see. But I don't think so."

Liquigas-Cannondale's Peter Sagan made it two for two in the Amgen Tour of California by winning stage two in Santa Cruz. As he did in stage one, Sagan overcame drama late in the race, this time after being involved in a crash and then opting for a wheel change on the penultimate climb. Timmy Duggan rode incredibly as he led a string of Liquigas-Cannondale riders into Santa Cruz on the final descent. From there, it was Sagan who had the presence of mind to know that the final corner was key to the win. He came through first and punched his way to the line.

"With two climbs in the end of the stage today, I am really happy to win," he said, celebrating his fifth stage win at the Tour of California. "I was thinking when I was still in the front group on the last climb I would try and win another stage. I knew the last corner was close to the finish so I decided to take the turn from the first position, and I won the stage."

Sagan's reward was a Tour of California themed surfboard, the overall leader's California bear, three more bouquets of flowers and three more leader's jerseys (overall, sprint and young rider).

Liquigas-Cannondale's Peter Sagan scored big in the first stage of the Amgen Tour of California in Santa Rosa. The young superstar chased back after a late flat tire with just ten km to go only to be presented with another challenge with three km left, when teammate Ted King was struck by a swerving rider and taken down. Sagan, who was on King's wheel, narrowly missed the crash and found Daniel Oss to drive him to the front. At 250m to go, Sagan started his massive sprint and took the victory, his fourth of the year and fourth in the Tour of California.

"It was a really confusing sprint because it was a small field. With 10km to go I flatted, but I knew there was time to get back in. Thanks to the work of my teammates I didn't panic, and we were able to get back on easily. With 3km to go one of my teammates Ted King crashed, and I hope he's okay, but thanks to Daniel Oss, he piloted me to the finish and I was able to win."

When asked about his chances for overall victory, Sagan replied "It is going to be very hard to hold onto the yellow jersey. I'm okay on the smaller climbs, but it's only going to get harder and harder as the week goes on."

Sagan's spoils for the day include the stage win, leader's jersey, sprint jersey and best young rider jersey. He was seemingly more tired from the podium presentations!

"When we first rode the bike back in the spring of 2011, it was a pre-production prototype. As we have learned firsthand over the years, it makes no sense to form a strong opinion based on a prototype frame due to the plethora of changes that often occur before the final “production” tag is applied. And so we waited, and waited, and waited for a real bike until early October, so this is the first actual test of the new Cannondale SuperSix Evo model..." Continue reading the full post at www.roadbikeaction.com
