Ciutu Negru (Asturias)

Bienvenido! Our paths meet this morning in the stunning medieval city of León. After we get fitted to our Cannondale, we will have a short transfer towards the destination of the day: the mountain pass of Pajares Ciutu Negru. This fearsome climb is making its first appearance on the Vuelta, drawing comparisons to the Angliru. We will warm up beforehand but when we attack the Ciutu Negru, it will fight back! Lots of jabs at 5 and 4%, some body blows at 8 and 10%, uppercuts in the 13 and 14%, a little pause in the center of the climb, then haymaker kilometers at 11, 14 and 18% - KO at 23kms. Once we’ve made it to the top, let see how the pros fare! After finishing our viewing, we will take an half-hour transfer to Hotel Bal on the Asturian coast. This evening enjoy a traditional dinner and the famous Asturian cider.

Gijon (Asturias)

Today the riders of La Vuelta enjoy a rest day. We will take a 20km transfer to Ribadesella where we will start cycling upstream on quiet roads along the river Sella all the way up to the lakes of Covadonga. This is one of the classic stages of La Vuelta; for 20 years this was the traditional finish to the race. After riding, we will transfer to the hotel and at night we go to Gijon, a thriving port city of Asturias. There are many bars and restaurants to be found where you can have dinner tonight and your guides will be sure to point out the best!

Fuente Dé

Today, we switch regions from Asturias to Cantabria, and we will be the stars of the road, riding the same route that the peloton will ride later that day. Passing through the deep valleys under the shadows of lush mountains (this area is called “Green Spain” for a reason), we will climb both the gorgeous pass of “La Hermiada” and the stage finish at Fuente Dé, where our hotel will give us front row seats to the finish. The pros have to tiredly depart; we are the lucky ones staying at this restful abode in the Picos de Europa National Park!

Peñafiel

The riders will be braving the gusty flats of the “Meseta” of the Castilian and Rioja interior today. We… are not, choosing the pleasures of Green Spain instead. Our descent today will lead us from Fuente Dé and through two mountainous national parks. Our major climb of the day, Puerto San Gloria (26.7km 1609m) will lead us to the high interior of Spain before we arrive in the National Park of Fuentes Carrionas and Fuente Cobre-Montaña Palentina, created in 2000 to protect the local species of brown bear and avian habitat. The gently undulating terrain will be perfect for maintaining our cardio without ever putting us in the red. Our ride will come to an end in Guardo, at the base of the Cantabrian Mountains. From there we will transfer to Peñafiel, the heart of the legendary wine region, the Ribera del Duero. Staying at the Pesquera Hotel, we will learn –and taste- all about this historic wine area of Europe and enjoy a delicious dinner at the hotel’s restaurant.

Segovia

Another day, another national park, another amazing ride. Today we will speed through the narrow gorges of the Hoces del Rio Duratón National Park, on our winding route to Segovia. No major climbs today, save a 6km romp at 4% and some other one-kilometer dandies, but the general elevation is up, so we will be working steadily. The final kilometers descend to Segovia, a UNESCO World-Heritage Site best known for its 1800-year-old Roman aqueduct, a massive feat of Classical engineering. Take some time to enjoy this city’s history before dinner on your own; your guides will be happy to point out some great local restaurants for your choosing.

Bola del Mundo and Madrid

We will hop on our bikes to ride to the Sierra de Guadarrama, the mountain range north of Madrid. We will ride in the area of the valley of Rascafría after passing by two magnificent royal sites, the palace of La Granja and Riofrío. Do we take a moment for a regal pause or hammer to the Bola Del Mundo mountain of today’s spectacular Vuelta finish? The Bola Del Mundo (23km, 2256m for our departure) is where Vincenzo Nibali sealed his win in 2010. A must-see for any Liquigas fan. We will join the thousands of spectators waiting to cheer on their favorite riders; they’ll be cheering us too as we get close to the top and its 24% gradient.  Afterwards, we will transfer to Madrid to the 5-star Derby Hotel. This evening we will dine while watching a flamenco show!

Madrid

This morning we will take some city bikes and get to know Madrid by two wheels, visiting the city center and getting to know all of its main monuments. Around 1pm we will leave the bikes and head to the VIP area in Plaza de Cibeles to see the final stage of La Vuelta as the cyclists ride ten rounds on the Paseo de Castellana before one rider achieves a final stage victory.. Let the good times roll with drinks and tapas provided in the VIP area. After the Vuelta, we’ll have a final dinner together for a great last night while we enjoy the post-race atmosphere.

Departure

Say good bye to the Vuelta and Madrid in any way you see fit. Madrid coffee shops make some of the best café con leche in the world - take time to enjoy one in the late morning.
