Choosing the Right Gravel Bike

Endurance or race gravel: which bike fits your riding style?

Think about the type of rides you love most. If gravel means long days in the saddle and steady pacing, that’s exactly what an endurance gravel bike is made for. For sharp surges, fast racing, and punchy climbs, a racing gravel bike delivers the ride you’re after.

Same category. Two very different personalities.

Both thrive on adventure. But they’ll take you there in completely different ways.

Let’s break it down.

A Note on Road vs Gravel

Before we dig deeper, a quick note on naming. In road cycling, “endurance” usually refers to a smoother, more comfortable version of a road bike. Gravel also has an endurance subtype, but with its own twist. Here, endurance means a bike designed for long, mixed-surface rides with extra stability and comfort built in.

So when we talk about endurance gravel bikes versus racing gravel bikes, we’re talking about two sub-styles within the gravel category — not road versus gravel as a whole.

What Makes a Gravel Bike Built for Endurance or Racing?

A gravel bike shows its strengths on mixed terrain trails, seamlessly transitioning from paved roads to gravel paths. But, depending on your specific riding goals, you’ll benefit more from one subtype of gravel bikes over the other.

All Cannondale gravel bikes are capable racing machines, however there are some features of the bikes which make them well suited to endurance riding or racing depending on the terrain, distance, and how much you intend to carry.

Cannondale endurance gravel bikes are built to conquer rugged routes in comfort. These versatile bikes are designed to minimize physical fatigue during long days over rough terrain, maximize storage for all your essentials, and deliver superior traction across the most demanding unpaved surfaces.

Cannondale racing gravel bikes maximize the power transfer and speed capabilities for racing over smoother gravel. Their clean, aerodynamic design puts the rider in a more aggressive, stretched-out position, offers extra agility on quick turns and doesn’t compromise on speed, all to help you break away.

Different builds. Different vibes. Same dirt under your wheels.

Geometry and Frame Design

The crucial differences between gravel endurance and gravel racing bikes are apparent in a few key design elements.

Endurance bikes are all about laid-back angles, longer wheelbase and chainstay length, and taller stack. This geometry supports the rider, increasing the comfort and control on uneven terrain, during seated climbs and high-speed descents. With a focus on stability and a forgiving ride, Cannondale's bikes are engineered for comfort and capability on rugged terrain, featuring built-in flex or suspension to handle rough surfaces with ease. For example, the Kingpin rear suspension system on the Topstone Carbon is specifically designed to absorb trail impact and keep you comfortable for long hours or even days on the trail.

On the other end we have gravel racing bikes with race-focused geometry that is closer to a road bike. Shorter wheelbase and chainstay and lower stack work to make the bike more responsive and agile, while putting the rider’s weight closer to the rear. This ensures sufficient stability on quick turns and immediate power transfer during accelerations.

Tires and Wheels
Tire clearance is another key element setting these subtypes apart. Endurance gravel bikes such as the Cannondale Topstone Alloy typically accommodate wider tires (even up to 55mm), often with extra tread, at the cost of higher rolling resistance. This gives you maximum traction on technical trails, also making it an excellent option when racing on rougher gravel, and allows you to enjoy a smooth ride on light gravel.

Gravel bikes designed for speed on smoother gravel are often equipped with deep-rimmed aero wheels, optimized to help them cut through the air faster, helping to go further, faster. Although ideal for gravel race bikes, something more rugged and burly may be better suited for your bikepacking adventures, or when racing on rougher terrain. While still wider than most road bikes, Cannondale’s gravel race bike, the SuperX, is optimized for tires up to 48mm, reducing rolling resistance and keeping the ride light and crisp.

As 2024 Unbound Race winner Lachlan Morton told BikeRadar, wider tires mimic suspension by reducing "that up and down motion" and thus making for a more comfortable ride, but "you kind of lose out" on "really high speed stuff." In 2025, Lachlan prioritized speed over comfort and rode Cannondale’s gravel race bike LAB71 SuperX with 44mm Vittoria Mezcal tires on the Traka 360, Europe’s premier gravel race.

Gearing and Components

Endurance builds come with wide gear ranges and handlebars for control on steep climbs and sketchy descents. Take Topstone 2 CUES as an example. The CUES U6030 system comes in a 1x (single chainring) setup with a wide-range cassette, which provides excellent low gear for climbing steep, difficult terrain.

Gravel bikes optimised for speed, on the other hand, tighten things up. Close gear ratios help keep cadence consistent and power delivery smooth. The Cannondale SuperX LAB71 is equipped with the SRAM RED AXS 13-speed system, which provides a huge gear range with smaller jumps between cogs in the most-used high-end gears. That means you get to maintain a consistent rhythm and find the perfect gear ratio for subtle changes in speed and gradient. Integrated cockpits also reduce drag and weight. The SuperX routes internal cables through the head tube to provide an even cleaner, more aerodynamic profile.

Mounting Points

Another noticeable difference between the two gravel bike subtypes is in the mounting points (or lack thereof).

For longer bikepacking and touring trips, you’re going to need a bike that can support you and your gear. Endurance bikes are laden with multiple mounts for water bottles, a top tube bag, frame bags, panniers, and racks, to make sure you can pack all you need for your bikepacking trips.

Cannondale’s Topstone Carbon bikes come equipped with in-frame storage for fast access to essentials like repair tools. It’s something you hope you won’t need but will definitely be grateful for if bad luck leaves you stranded in the wilderness. Adventure-ready gravel bikes also come with mounting points for fenders, which protect you, your gear and your buddy drafting behind you from mud sprays and road grit.

On the other hand, gravel race bikes often have minimal or no extra mounting points to save weight and enhance aerodynamics, so that nothing is holding you back.

Choosing the Right Gravel Bike for You

With so many great rides to choose from, we know it can be hard to find the right bike to unlock the most from your riding experience, but don't worry, we've done the legwork for you. Our top recommendation is right here:

Best Endurance Gravel Bike – Topstone Alloy
While the Topstone Alloy gravel bike is also a capable racing machine on rough gravel, this bike is ready for that multi-day bikepacking trip you wanted to go on. The SmartForm C2 Alloy frame blends strength and finesse, giving you the durability you need without weighing you down. With big 45mm tire clearance, you get more grip, more comfort, and the freedom to push further into the rough stuff.

The microSHIFT Sword shifting makes every climb or descent smooth and reliable. Topstone Alloy offers comfort, control, and the flexibility to handle any ride you take on.
Best All Round Gravel Bike – Topstone Carbon
Step up to the Topstone Carbon, Lachlan Morton’s choice for Unbound XL in 2025.

This bike features a light frame with racier handling, while still keeping the mounts and tire clearance that make it practical for mixed terrain.

The Kingpin suspension is a key feature that gives this bike a level of comfort you won’t typically find on pure racing bikes. It smooths out rough gravel without the added weight of traditional suspension, making it the perfect balance of speed and versatility for riders who want to push hard but still need some cushion for the long haul. And for cyclists who prefer extra comfort on gravel, Lefty fork models offer full suspension.
Best Racing Gravel Bike – SuperX
SuperX can be categorized as a gravel and cyclocross race bike; its lightweight frame, aggressive geometry, and performance-driven design make it a top contender for racing.

With high-end drivetrains and Cannondale’s LAB71 package, the SuperX offers the perfect balance of speed, control, and versatility — well-suited for those who want to race both gravel and cyclocross with one bike.

Finding Your Fit: Endurance vs. Race

The best way to decide between an endurance gravel bike and a racing gravel bike? Ride them. Nothing else compares.

When you swing a leg over an endurance gravel bike, pay attention to how the position feels. Is your back relaxed? Do you feel steady rolling over rough sections? Picture yourself a few hours in — still comfortable?

On a racing gravel bike, focus on how it reacts. Does it jump forward when you push on the pedals? How does it handle tight corners? Do you like the sharper, more aggressive stance?

A short spin can tell you a lot. Comfort, responsiveness, confidence; those are the real specs. Trust your instincts, because the right ride is the one that feels like it belongs to you.

And to help you further with your decision, here is our summary of the key differences between the two types of gravel bikes. Note, though, that it’s not uncommon for these bikes to have some overlap in their features — after all, both are gravel!
